I remember being in grammar school saying I couldn’t wait for high school. I remember being in my first job, saying I couldn’t wait for a promotion. I remember being in my first relationship, saying I couldn’t wait for a ring.
How many of us are the same? We cannot wait until the next step, the next move, the next goal. We believe that where we are is not where we are “supposed” to be. Guess what?
We are exactly where we need to be. Where we are now is preparing us for where we need to be. The preparation allows us to get to the next. But the ruminating can take away lessons that need to be learned.
For instance, when I was in my first job, I wanted a promotion so badly and got it. However, I missed the signs that it wasn’t the job for me. I didn’t notice until it was too late how miserable and unfulfilled I was. All because I was looking ahead.
Thinking constantly about the future takes away from the present. Let’s allow ourselves to pay attention to the present for the sake of our future. The thoughts and feelings that currently arise show us what it is meant for our futures.
We have two choices: we can choose to listen or we can choose to ignore. Listening will lead to attention; ignoring will lead to distraction. Listening to what is going on with us now will allow us to pay attention to our futures.
What is our choice for our present? What is it that we are going to do? What is it that we are making the choice to commit to?
Will we commit to the present? Will we choose listening to ourselves in the current moment? These are questions that only we can answer and dedicate ourselves to. However, the benefits are well worth it.
I have an invitation just for you. This week, I invite you to stay in the present. Notice your feelings, thoughts, and emotions with each and every activity. What you learn from it will be well worth it.
I am practicing this as well, along with you. Have a wonderful week!!
